In 1672 Peter the First ordered the construction of Russia's first public theatre on Red Square. Serf theatre flourished through the 18th century and by the dawning of the 19th century, both Moscow and St. Petersburg had become major theatrical centers with the Bolshoi and the Maly. Following severe restrictions during the Soviet era, today's scene is one of total liberation and rich creative freedom. It is truly a wonder to behold.

Day 1 – Arrival Moscow
Arrival in Moscow; the group will be met by an English Russian theatre guide and private coach and transferred to hotel for check in. This evening we gather for a welcome briefing and dinner at the hotel. Overnight Moscow
Day 2 – Moscow
This morning, after breakfast in the hotel, depart for a panoramic city tour of Moscow. If it is your first visit to Moscow or need a refresher with the capital, this is an excellent way to see the exterior of famous buildings and places to which you may return at your leisure. See Red Square, the Kremlin, Sparrow Hills, Bolshoi Theatre, Christ the Saviour Cathedral, Victory Park, Novodevichy Convent, the White House, and all the key sites of this amazing city. This evening we attend a performance at one of Moscow's theatres. Overnight Moscow
Day 3 – Moscow Theatre
A day dedicated to the theatre in Moscow. This morning we visit the Alexei Bakhrushin Central Theatre Museum, founded in the late 19th century, which houses an enormous collection of paraphernalia from the rich history of Russian theatre, including costumes, set designs, billboard posters etc. From portraits of the earliest Russian actors through to the extraordinary and justifiably celebrated avant garde costumes and sets from the 1920s - including works by Rodchenko for the great Soviet director Vsevolod Meyerhold, this museum is essential viewing. One of the jewels of the exhibition is a glorious puppet theatre.This afternoon enjoy a backstage tour of one of Moscow's main theatres - the Bolshoi Theatre, the Moscow Arts Theatre or the Stanislavsky-Nemirovich Danchenko Theatre, followed by a workshop / lecture with a leading member of Moscow's theatre community. Day 4 – Kremlin / St. Petersburg
Morning visit to the Kremlin and Armoury. The Kremlin is the office of the Russian president. still seeing the churches and government buildings located within the Kremlin walls, and then visiting the Armoury room with its impressive collection of Faberge eggs, Royal dresses, and carriages and so on. Afternoon free for shopping / independent sightseeing. Enjoy an evening at the world-famous Moscow Circus. Puppet theatre is popular is Moscow and a performance here is an alternative to the circus. Late evening departure and overnight sleeper train to St Petersburg. Overnight Train
Day 5 – St. Petersburg
Early arrival to St Petersburg. Breakfast will be arranged in a local hotel or restaurant, and followed by a panoramic city tour of St Petersburg, visiting all the major sights and introducing you to this beautiful city. See the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, housed in the Winter Palace of Catherine the Great, the Admiralty Buildings, Nevskij Prospect, St Isaac's Cathedral and the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood. Entrance is included to the Peter and Paul fortress, the oldest building complex in the city. We will then check in to our hotel and the rest of the day is available for independent study. Day 6 – St. Petersburg Theatre
Morning visit to the Hermitage museum, a magnificent collection of art housed in the Winter Palace of Catherine the Great. The Hermitage museum is one of the biggest museums in the world, founded in 1764. With its collection of over 2.7 million items, including masterpieces by Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Roden, Rembrandt, Rubens and French impressionists. The gala rooms of the Winter Palace, a former royal residence, are also open for visitors. The complex has its own unique theatre, which we will tour.
Afternoon visit to St Petersburg's State Museum of Theatre and Music, including a lecture on the history of the theatre in St Petersburg. The museum is located in the historical centre of the city, in a building which forms part of the architectural complex of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The visit will include a backstage tour of the theatre. Evening performance at one of St Petersburg's theatres. Overnight St. Petersburg
Day 7 – Pushkin
This morning we will visit the Catherine Palace in the town of Pushkin (formerly Tsarskoye Selo) 29km south of St. Petersburg. The construction of the palace for the Empress Catherine started in 1717. A park in the French style was laid out around it and, in the middle of 18th century, Tsarskoye Selo became the official royal residence. This palace is famous for the "Amber Room", now completely restored to its former glory. Not far from the Catherine's Palace is the Lyceum where the great poet Alexander Pushkin studied; the town was renamed in his honour.
Upon returning to the city our final visit is to the Yusupov Palace- the former residence of an old noble Russian family - the Yusupovs. It was the setting for Rasputin's murder, and there is an exhibition detailing the events that led up to his death. The palace also boasts its own miniature theatre, and we end the tour with a private performance, followed by a farewell dinner back at the hotel. Overnight St. Petersburg
Day 8 – Home
Transfer to the airport and return flight home.
